How Long Do Dental Crowns Last? Tips for Maximizing Their Lifespan

What are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown also sometimes known and referred to as a ‘cap’ is a prosthesis, which imitates and functions as an actual tooth. They are fitted over the natural tooth or in some cases where teeth are missing, attached to a dental implant. Crowns are often used where there are large cavities or badly broken teeth but the root and below the gum line are still strong and stable. They can also be made to make dental ‘bridges’, these are multiple crowns, fixed together to bridge small gaps where there may only be 1-2 teeth missing.

How they are made and fitted

Firstly you’re your natural teeth will be filed down, removing a thin outer layer of the tooth. Impressions of your now filed teeth and any surrounding teeth are then taken. The impressions are then usually sent off to a lab to be made, but with Alanya Smile Clinic, we have our very own lab, which is located close to the clinic. This not only allows us to make the crowns in a much quicker time frame, but also allows us to make any alterations to the teeth when necessary whilst you are still with us, ensuring a perfect fit and full customer satisfaction.

We give a full oral consultation and examination of the teeth, including x-rays and images taken by an intraoral scanner. This is used as the oral scanner is more accurate than an x-ray alone and can tell us all we need to know to restore your smile. During your consultation we will discuss your desired shape, length, shade and design of teeth and also the overall look you would like to achieve with treatment. This information is then inputted into Smile Design software, where you can view visually how your new teeth will look and improve your appearance before they are made.

Once the design of your tooth/teeth has been decided, the digital imaging created is then sent to the Laboratory and inputted into a CAD-CAM machine for cutting.

With the latest Computer Aided Design technology, your crowns are then cut from a block of porcelain to the exact shape and size that you have chosen. With this advanced technology the waiting time for your crowns to be made is much less as they are not sent to a laboratory, they are made on site in our own Lab.

After Care and General Hygiene

After the fitting of your dental crowns it advised to wait at least 1 hour before eating or drinking and avoid hard chewy foods for the first few hours to allow the dental cement used to secure the crown to fully set.

Sensitivity to of the gums and teeth can be normal after dental crown treatment for up to 2-3 weeks after, but should you experience any throbbing, sudden pains or discomfort with your crowns after this time then it is advised to return to the clinic where treatment was given or visit your dentist.

Brushing twice daily is essential, using a non-abrasive gel toothpaste as whitening toothpastes can contain baking sodas which with persistent use can damage crowns. Flossing is also important daily, to remove plaque and food debris from between the crowns. As with natural teeth, crowns can still harbour the same bacteria and plaque build-up so it’s extremely important to pay extra attention to crowns and surrounding areas, but take extra care not to pull the floss upwards as this can loosen a crown and cause damage, floss should be guided directly through the spaces between crowns to ensure a safe removable of plaque and food. Regular dental check-ups are still needed as well as deep cleaning every 6 months with your dentist. Good oral care and hygiene with routine checks will help extend the life span of your crowns.

How long do dental crowns last?

On an average dental crowns should last around 15 years, some can even last between 25-30 years if the patient takes great care of them. Typically porcelain crowns are said to last anywhere between 5-15 years. We are fully committed to the treatment and quality of products that we provide and therefor give a 10 years Guarantee with all of our dental crowns.

Are you considering getting dental crowns to improve the appearance and functionality of your teeth? One question that many people have is how long they can expect their dental crowns to last. In this blog post, we’ll explore the factors that affect the lifespan of dental crowns and share tips for maximizing their longevity.

Factors That Affect the Lifespan of Dental Crowns

There are several factors that can impact how long your dental crowns last, including:

  1. Material: Dental crowns can be made from a variety of materials, each with different durability levels. For example, porcelain crowns are typically more fragile than metal or ceramic crowns.

  2. Bite force: If you grind your teeth or have a heavy bite force, your dental crowns may wear down more quickly.

  3. Oral hygiene: Good oral hygiene is essential for maintaining the lifespan of your dental crowns. If you don’t brush and floss regularly, bacteria can accumulate around the crowns and cause decay.

  4. Maintenance: Regular dental checkups and cleanings can help identify any issues with your dental crowns early on and prevent more serious problems from developing.

Tips for Maximizing the Lifespan of Dental Crowns

Now that you know what factors can affect the lifespan of dental crowns, here are some tips for maximizing their longevity:

  1. Practice good oral hygiene: Brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, and use an antiseptic mouthwash to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

  2. Wear a nightguard: If you grind your teeth, wearing a nightguard can help protect your dental crowns from wear and tear.

  3. Be careful with hard foods: Avoid biting down on hard foods like ice or hard candy, as they can cause your dental crowns to chip or crack.

  4. Schedule regular checkups: Visiting your dentist regularly can help identify any issues with your dental crowns before they become more serious.
